The Origins of Healing

Hakim Ibn Sina was the founder of Unani Medicine, which is a holistic healing system that encompasses virtually all known healing systems in the world.

The Unani system of medical treatment has its roots in Greece, having been developed by Hippocrates, a renowned philosopher and physician who lived from 460-366 BC. Hippocrates developed the "humoral theory" as a basis for treating diseases, which outlined the wet-and-dry characteristics of the human body's various compartments. This system was later adopted by the Arabs in India, and further developed when some Unani scholars and physicians fled to the country following the Mongols' invasion of Persia. Subsequently, the Unani system has become a well-established medical system in India, and is recognised by the Government of India for clinical practice as well as research funding. Treatment is administered through plants-based formulations, such as oil, tincture, powder, and ointment.

The utilization of simple herbs offers numerous advantages. In addition to its active principles, an herb contains other components such as resins, gums, sugars, vitamins, salts, inorganic compounds and a variety of plant compounds. This natural defense mechanism protects the healthy tissues from the adverse effects of the herb, and even the long-term use of an herb in a medicinal dose does not cause any damage.

History of Ayurveda

The roots of Ayurveda can be traced back to the 2nd century BC, when Hindu Philosophical teachings known as Vaisheshika were developed by the school of logic known as Nyaya, and the manifestation framework known as Samkhya was developed at the same time.

Ayurvedic medicine is based on the fundamental principles of doctrine.

Ayurveda considers the entire universe to be composed of five elements, Vayu, Jala, Aakash, Prithvi and Teja, which are collectively referred to as "Tridoshas" in Ayurvedic texts. These five elements are believed to comprise the three fundamental humors of the human body in various combinations. Vata dosha is the most important of these three humors, as it is responsible for the transportation of cells, maintaining the balance of electrolytes in the body, and the elimination of waste products. Dryness is believed to enhance the efficacy of Vata dosha. In Ayurveda, the human body is composed of seven tissues: Rasa, Meda, Rakta, Asthi, Majja, Mamsa and Shukra. Additionally, three malas, Purisha, Mutra and Sweda, are believed to exist in the body.

Ayurveda teaches that the body is composed of seven distinct types of tissues, collectively referred to as "sapta dhatus": Pitta dosha, Vata, Pitta, Kapha, and Anabolism dosha. Pitta is responsible for regulating the body's temperature, coordination of the optic nerve, and control of hunger and thirst. Heat conditions can exacerbate Pitta, which is exacerbated by the consumption of sweet and fatty foods. Kapha, on the other hand, is responsible for lubricating the joints and providing the body with the lubrication it needs to function optimally. Vata is believed to regulate the body's metabolism, while Pitta and Kapha are responsible for anabolism. In order to maintain a healthy state, it is necessary to balance the three dosas with other factors, as any imbalance between them can lead to sickness or disease.

The Dhatu Rakta is analogous to the blood and is responsible for regulating blood cell circulation and supplying the body with blood components. The Dhatu Mamsa is composed of skeletal muscle that provides support for the Dhatu Meda, which is the adipose fat of the body. Additionally, the Dhatu Asthi is composed of the body's bones and the Dhatu Majja is composed of bone marrow and the fluids necessary for oleating the bones and the proper functioning of the body'sreproductive organs.

Ayurveda has been the dominant system among the Indian systems of medicine, and has been prevalent around the world for centuries. In this article, we have limited the discussion of the various aspects of Indian Systems of Medicine (ISMs) to the Ayurveda system, and only a brief overview of the rest has been provided. Following Ayurveda are the Siddha system, Homeopathy, and Unani system, all of which are still in their infancy.
